In November 2011 repair of the first moor which is a passenger one was finished in Vyborgsky Port.
Situation concerning moors is critical in Vyborgsky Port. More than half of them are out of use and reqire reconstruction and repair. But the state that is the owner is in no hurry to realize the scheme of partnership between the state and a private company and to invest in restoration of the moors.
Last time the passenger moor was repaired in 1977. Besides the wear of the moor itself there was another problem: the adjacent part of the aquatoria needed clearing.
By order of 2009 adressed to Rosmorport this moor must be repaired but Rosmorpord has not even ordered a project of this repair. Nevertheless during all these years the owner got money for use of the moor and should therefore have provided a satisfactory condition of the property.
As a result the control organization ordered to stop using the moor since September of the current year. Therefore repair carried out by The Port itself is an important event in principle.
A lot of work was carried out on wall restoration and seam mending between blocks of the upper building. Defects of the territory were removed and the asphalt cover was restored. Besides a five-metre safety wheel bar by the moor was restored. Many unnecessary things and rubbish that interfered with navigation were removed from the bottom. Today this moor is the most expensive element of the infrastructure of passenger reception. Next step will be reconstruction of the passage point for passengers at Vyborgsky Port.
Navigation on passenger lines finished in September and will start only in the end of April – the beginning of May. If reconstruction were not carried out now it would mean that in spring sea navigation between Vyborg and Finland would cease for passengers.
Since 2006 the quantity of passengers on the line Lappeenrant – Vyborg increased by 70 %. The income of the port increased 2.7 times during that period. Of course, passenger reception is not the main trend of work. Vyborgsky Port functions as a cargo port and passenger reception gives only 1 % of the whole income. But the management of the Port is sure that serving passenger ships should continue as it has not only a commercial importance.
Moreover this trend is actively developing. In summer of 2011 a new line Vyborg – Khamina was open. And since the first months the quantity of tourists from Khamina was already 20 % of all the passengers.
There is no doubt that the season of 2012 will become the beginning of an active development of passenger transport in Vyborgsky Port.
